Police impede London Critical Mass

London Critical Mass police block

Police try to manage the July 2006 ride of London's Critical Mass.

Having won its court case against the police, London CM is now being subjected by the cycle cops to barricading and cars being allowed to nose into the ride. This had the effect of slowing down the Mass and causing fragmentation as well as extra traffic congestion. Towards the end of the ride a cyclist is accused of denting the fragile wing of a London taxi with his hand and a policeman takes his particulars.

London CM free to ride

This week London Critical Mass cyclists won a high court decision against the Metropolitan Police over the legality of the peddle-powered demonstrations.

This comes after police handed leaflets to cyclists at a Critical Mass last September claiming that they were unlawful because under the Public Order Act the organisers were required to give six days notice of the date and proposed route, plus their names and addresses. However Lord Justice Sedley and Mr Justice Gray ruled that police were misinterpreting the law, and that no advanced notice was required because Critical Mass was not a ‘notifiable procession’ under the POA.

Christian-based direct action gathering, 27-29 July 06, Leeds

CHRISTIANITY HELPED TO CREATE CAPITALISM...NOW IT MUST DESTROY IT!

Now listen, you rich people, weep and wail because of the misery that is coming upon you. Your wealth has rotted, and moths have eaten your clothes. Your gold and silver are corroded. Their corrosion will testify against you and eat your flesh like fire. You have hoarded wealth in the last days. Look! The wages you failed to pay the workmen who mowed your fields are crying out against you. The cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord Almighty. You have lived on earth in luxury and self-indulgence. You have fattened yourselves in the day of slaughter. You have condemned and murdered innocent men, who were not opposing you. (James 5:1-6)

With the unfortunate (but not entirely unexpected) outcome of the court case now known, we must take a moment to consider the direction our future protest will take.
