Save Frenchwood Rec - Save The Ribble!

Local people will be rambling around Frenchwood Recreation Ground on Sunday 10th September. The area, which includes popular football pitches and borders the beautiful River Ribble is under threat from ideas in Preston City Council's 'Riverworks' proposals - which include large housing developments over green areas including the rec, as well as the environmentally disastrous idea of building a barrage across the river, and concreting over the banks for boat moorings.

Mersey Waste Holdings faced determined opposition this morning when the first lorry carrying waste arrived at Hafod Quarry, Johnstown, near Wrexham. Anxious to get the lorry into the site with the minimum of delay, the Police used heavy-handed tactics to drag protesters out of the way with scant regard for health and safety. Welsh media were in attendance but didn't manage to film the blockaders being dragged away.

Tip for climbing fences

pocket ladder

Many activists get arrested cutting through military fences and so get the extra charge of 'malicious mischief'. Using a ladder to climb fences is impracticable as you tend to get intercepted and charged for approaching a base with a ladder. You can buy 'telescopic-ladders' but they are very expensive so here is the cheapo solution.

Setting Up A Merseyside neighbourhood for Climate Camp

It's easy to feel overwhelmed by the problem of climate change. It's easy to feel that we can't make a difference. It is for this reason that from August 26th to September 4th , a Camp for Climate action will take place in Megawatt Valley, near Leeds and Selby. The aim of the camp is to allow individuals to overcome feelings of isolation and helplessness by bringing them together, to create a community of resistance, against climate chaos. We hope the camp inspires people to take action, share ideas and beyond the camp, make a start in their own localities and spheres of interest.

After a first, packed meeting in January in Leeds at the Common Place Social Centre, there is an opportunity for those involved in social centres to meet again at this years climate camp in august - to share stories, experiences, skills, strengthen the network and organise for the future. There are now about 20 radical, self managed social spaces across the UK and the number grows!
